Deputy Speaker of the Gauteng Legislature 7th Legislature (2024 – 2029)

The Hon. Nontombi Emelda November was elected as the Deputy Speaker of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature on 14 June 2024. She supports the Speaker in ensuring the orderly and effective conduct of House proceedings and plays a crucial role in strengthening democratic governance in Gauteng.

Biography

The Hon. Nontombi Emelda November is a committed public servant and leader with a strong background in governance, stakeholder engagement and legislative processes.

Prior to her election as Deputy Speaker, she served in various leadership roles within the public sector and has been actively involved in advancing inclusive governance, community development and the empowerment of women and youth in Gauteng.

Her election as Deputy Speaker reflects the Legislature’s continued commitment to a people-centred, responsive and effective democracy.

Roles and Responsibilities

The Deputy Speaker performs a constitutional and administrative role, including:

  • Assists the Speaker

    Supports the Speaker in presiding over the proceedings of the House.

  • Performs delegated functions

    Carries out any functions assigned by the Speaker or the House.

  • Ensures orderly proceedings

    Helps maintain decorum and the proper conduct of business in the House.
