Speaker of the Gauteng Legislature 7th Legislature (2024 – 2029)

The Hon. Morakane Mosupyoe was elected as the Speaker of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature on 14 June 2024. As the presiding officer of the House, the Speaker plays a critical role in ensuring effective and orderly proceedings, upholding the rules of the Legislature, and promoting public confidence in democratic governance.

Biography

The Hon. Morakane Mosupyoe is a seasoned public servant and committed leader with extensive experience in governance, stakeholder engagement and legislative processes.

Before her election as Speaker, she served in various leadership roles within the public sector and has been actively involved in advancing development, transparency and inclusive governance in Gauteng.

Her election as Speaker reflects the Legislature’s continued commitment to strong, principled and effective leadership.

The Speaker performs a constitutional and administrative role, including:

  • Presides over the proceedings of the House

    Ensures orderly, fair and effective sittings.

  • Upholds the Constitution and legislative rules

    Interprets and applies the rules of the Legislature.

  • Maintains order and decorum

    Ensures a respectful and productive environment in the House.

  • Represents the Legislature

    Acts as the public face and spokesperson of the Legislature.

  • Oversees administration

    Provides political oversight of the administration of the Legislature.

  • Promotes public participation

    Champions openness, access and engagement with the people of Gauteng.
